The United States Men’s National Team takes first place in group earning 7 points after the draw match with Panama. Bradley scores and Dempsey mades the difference in the final group match before quarter finals of the 2015 Gold Cup. The game ended a 1 – 1 draw Monday night and now it’s on to the knockout rounds. Panamana’s Perez found the back of the net in 34th minute, but it was a beautiful cross by Alejandro Bedoya to Bradley that tied the match. Panama needed a win to guarantee participation in next leg to the finals.
The match was played at the “Soccer Capital” of the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 host nation. The two teams played at Sporting Park, Kansas City.
The USA team went in the game with confidence after three consecutive wins in the tournament. USA, the host nation CONCACAF Gold,
Panama was in all red, and USA wore their white home kit.
Panama has only lost 3 of the past played 14 matches. USA was going in the match in 1st place of Group A with 6 points and Panama third in the group with 2 points.
Panama pressed early in first half to pressure the Americans for a win that will guarantee a passing onto the next round. After a foul by Morales #7 at minute 8 Panama’s #10 scores a goal after a freekick but it’s offsides opening minutes that put a shot to the back of the net. Minutes after Paname was denied another goal with a block from goalkeeper Brad Guzan after a spectacular corner almost turned into an own goal off Chris Wondolowski.
A GOOOAAAL by Panama 1 – 0 USA from Perez #7 in minute 33 with lovely passing between the Panamanian forwards with well deserved lead. Jejada after taking on an American defense with his back to the goal, turned to Alvarado in the box who found Perez who ran past Brooks to score from six yards.
Panama goes to half-time with a lead 1 nil. After half-time, the second-half substitutions of Clint Dempsey and DeAndre Yedlin gave the US team energy to began their attack.
GOOOAAAL by Michael Bradley who brings hope early in the second half to the USA soccer city fans by scoring in minute 55′ of the second round. Bedoya’s perfect cross landing on Bradley’s right foot which he poked for the equalizer into the net in the the 55th minute. The great set up to tie the game made Bedoya’s first appearance in the Gold Cup 2015 tournament a spectacular one. Dempseys plays and skills made the difference for the U.S. team once more.
A yellow card was given to Chandler for pulling on Quintero at minute 43 for a clear foul and Anibal Godoy #20 will miss quarter-final if Panama qualifies.
Panama had a good chance to regain the lead in the 75th minute but Guzan slapped away a shot by Miguel Cargo.
Another yellow card given this time to Garold Cummings for a handball at minute 87.
The draw means the US protected their record from only losing once in 34 group match games in Gold Cup history. The tied game makes the fourth match in total of 34 Gold Cup group stage matches the USMNT did not take the win. This left coach Jugen Klinsmann with confidence as he leads the US into the quarterfinal Saturday in Baltimore.
Two years again the Americans beat Los Canaleros 1 – 0 for a deja vu moment that would run the Panamanians hope to be left in game matches. Panama with two points must await the outcome of remaining group matches that will determine whether the team will advance to the next leg.
